Recurring Billing

Recurring Billing

The Recurring Billing API enables you to manage subscription, installment, and deferred billing arrangements for products and services. It supports plan-based billing, trial periods, recurring-payment lifecycle actions, billing-cycle management, manual collection, and full or partial refunds. Recurring Billing uses existing consumer profiles and payment methods, allowing you to focus on managing billing relationships and subscription lifecycles instead of payment method storage.

Key capabilities include the following:

  • Subscription plans
  • Installment plans
  • Deferred billing plans
  • Trial offers
  • Subscription-specific plan overrides
  • Billing cycle management
  • Consumer notifications
  • Merchant notifications
  • Refund processing

How Recurring Billing works

Follow these steps to get started with Recurring Billing:

  1. Request access — Follow the steps in Getting started to set up access to the Recurring Billing API.
  2. Manage recurring plans — Create and manage recurring plans that define your billing model, including pricing, billing frequency, setup fees, trial configurations, billing schedules, and auto-renew settings. A single plan can be used by multiple recurring payments.
  3. Manage recurring payments — Create recurring payments to enroll consumers in your products or services. A recurring payment links a consumer profile, payment method, billing schedule, and recurring plan together to automate future billing and payment collection. Customize individual recurring payments using plan overrides.
  4. Manage billing cycles — View and manage the billing cycles generated for each recurring payment. Billing cycles represent individual billing events and provide visibility into scheduled payments, payment status, refunds, and payment history.
  5. Manage consumer notifications — Configure merchant and consumer notification preferences, including email and webhook notifications, to help keep consumers informed about billing activity and payment status.
  6. Monitor and reconcile billing activity — Use recurring payment, billing cycle, refund, and payment data to reconcile recurring billing activity, monitor payment recovery performance, and support operational reporting. Recurring billing attributes are available in Pre-Funded, Transaction Details, and Submission Details reports. The Reporting API also includes a dedicated recurring program next billing report to help you identify active profiles, suspended payment methods, and payment methods nearing expiration before the next billing date.
