Merchant screening

Background checks to ensure merchants on your platform are eligible to use your payment network

Merchant screening for payment facilitators

As a payment facilitator (Payfac), you can use the Onboarding API to carry out essential screening checks on the merchants who want to accept payments on your platform.

Merchant screening is a way to confirm that your merchant clients do not have any issues preventing them from participating in J.P. Morgan payment networks. It complements your own background checks and Know Your Customer (KYC) due diligence process.

How it works

  • Submit your client's details for screening using the Onboarding API.
  • Let J.P. Morgan run background checks through our trusted networks.
  • Use the API to check for updates to be informed once screening is complete.

If your merchants passes screening, you receive an APPROVED response from the Onboarding API. Your merchant is registered to J.P. Morgan's payment networks and you can proceed.

If the merchant does not pass the screening process, you receive a DECLINED response from the Onboarding API. Your merchant cannot access the payment networks, and you should not proceed.

Why use the Onboarding API for screening?

This is a multifunctional API with many applications. This means if you ever need to onboard new clients or merchants into other J.P. Morgan payment solutions, you can use the same API.
