In-Store Payments

Payment enhancements

The following payment enhancements are available for in-person payments.

Contactless

All supported card brands accept NFC contactless payments, including device-based wallets. Contactless transaction limits apply per network and region.

Chip and PIN

Europay, Mastercard, Visa (EMV) chip transactions with online PIN, offline PIN, and offline enciphered PIN are supported. Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) for contactless is also supported, including SCA declines.

PIN data is encrypted at the terminal using a Zone PIN Key (ZPK). It is never stored or logged. For more information on key management and PIN encryption, refer to Key Management API.

Magstripe

Magstripe (MSR) transactions are supported for Visa, Mastercard, and American Express, and only under technical fallback conditions, when chip (EMV) processing cannot be completed successfully.

Magstripe fallback is permitted when:

  • A chip card is present, and
  • The terminal has attempted chip & PIN processing, but
  • The chip read or authentication fails after three consecutive attempts
  • After three failed chip attempts, the terminal may prompt the merchant or cardholder to swipe the card (magstripe) to complete the transaction.

Tipping

Implemented as part of the capture request by increasing the final transaction amount.

Behavior is unchanged from the current Payments API. Consult your implementation team for network and regional availability.
